Twin murder at West Mambalam

Saturday, September 26, 2009

A middle-aged housewife (40) and her 12-year-old son were brutally killed with a sharp weapon at an apartment situated in a buzzing neighbourhood in West Mambalam-Ashok Nagar on Thursday.
.
Both the deceased had received deep injuries on their neck giving rise to the suspicion that a crude weapon had been used for the twin-murder.

According to police, Ramasubramaniam was residing with his wife Ananthalakshmi alias Vijaya and two children at Postal Colony Third Street in West Mambalam.

Being employed as manager in a pharmaceutical firm in Bangalore, he used to come home only every week or for every 10 days to stay with his family.

When Shobana (19), his daughter studying in private engineering college, returned home on Thursday evening, she found the door of her home (in Kala Apartments) locked from outside Hence, she went to her friend’s house to while away the time. She tried to contact her mother over cell phone but it was switched off, police said.

Even at 9 pm, she found the house door locked. An uneasy Shobana waited for one more hour before seeking the help of neighbours who alerted the police.

A team from Ashok Nagar Police station visited the house at 11 pm and broke open the door. They found the bodies of Ananthalakshmi and her son Sooraj in a pool of blood in two different rooms. Both the victims bore a deep cut injury on the neck.

Police also recovered a scissor from one of the rooms and they suspect this instrument might have been used to kill the victims.

A sniffer dog was pressed into service which went up to Sreenivasa theatre before it halted. Forensic experts lifted finger prints from the crime scene.

The bodies were sent to Government Hospital at Royapettah for post-mortem. Police Commissioner T Rajendran visited the house this morning.

Speaking to reporters later, he said both the victims were killed by a sharp weapon and the motive behind the twin-murder was yet to be unravelled. Two special teams have been formed to investigate the case, he said.

While gold chains worth 15 sovereigns were missing from the neck of Ananthalakshmi, police found jewels valued at 40 sovereign were in place at the bureau. Hence, the twin-murder may not be for gain, they feel.
Moreover, the housewife would not have opened the door if she had not known the intruders. And hence, police also feel that someone known to the family might have committed the twin-murder.

Before leaving the door open after the crime, the culprit(s) had bought a new lock and locked the house from outside and left with the keys to make it all appear natural to the outsiders. Ramasubramaniam who has arrived from Bangalore this morning and his daughter Shobana are being further questioned by police.
