Mexico - Activities by Margarita Zavala during Mexican President Felipe Calderón’s Participation in Leaders' Summit in New York

During Mexican President Felipe Calderón's activities at the Heads of State Summit in New York, his wife Margarita Zavala visited the Mixteca Organization Plaza Comunitaria in Brooklyn, New York.

Accompanied by Dr. Gabriel Rincón, president and founder of this organization, Margarita Zavala toured the Plaza Comunitaria facilities, located in Sunset Boulevard, one of the areas with the highest concentration of Mexicans in New York.

During the tour, they were also joined by Rubén Beltrán, Mexican consul in New York, as well as Rebecca Camisa, moviemaker, producer and joint producer with HBO of the documentary entitled Which Way Home? on child migration.

Later on, Margarita Zavala met with members of this organization, who told her about the projects and activities they organize for the benefit of the Mexican community. She in turn thanked them for the work they do onm behalf of Mexicans living in New York.

Mixteca Organization began its activities by carrying out activities in the field of preventive health, particularly HIV/AIDS and developed an educational agenda, launching a community square that offers the community English lessons, computer courses, literacy classes, primary, secondary and high school and history lessons on Mexico.

The organization has 400 students, taught by 25 volunteers.
