Survivor Tragedy Last Night Sends Russell Swan Home

Friday, October 23, 2009

What happened on Survivor last night had been given away already, to reassure fans that the Survivor tragedy wasn't deadly. Every fan already knew that what would happen on Survivor last night was Russell Swan collapsing due to dehydration, and looking like he was on the brink of death. But Russell Swan made it through his Survivor tragedy and made it off the island alive - otherwise it would have been a real Survivor tragedy.

For days, Survivor ads ran with Jeff Probst saying that what would happen last night was the scariest thing he ever saw on the show. Of course, after people saw footage of Russell Swan collapsing on Survivor promo ads, they had more time to get ready. What was a Survivor tragedy in the heat of the moment, became just another TV cliffhanger.

Since the moment was given away, no one was shocked to see Russell Swan collapse on Survivor last night. If Russell had died, the news would have leaked a long time ago, and Survivor would have been the center of the TV and news world by now.

Reality TV is already taking a few lumps because of the Heene family's desire to be on it by creating the Balloon Boy hoax. Plus, Survivor: Samoa is already airing during a time of tragedy, after Samoa fell victim to heavy flooding weeks ago. Having a contestant die on Survivor last night would have brought the whole show to its knees.

However, what happened on Survivor last night was that Russell Swan passed out during a challenge, but made it through. But he was taken out of the game, despite his wishes to stay on. Jeff Probst blogged on Entertainment Weekly that Swan got very emotional after he was taken off - even after the game made him passed out. But Probst predicted that Russell would see how serious things were after watching Survivor last night.

Thanks to the Survivor tragedy, no one was voted off the show. Things will go on as scheduled next week, without any more scary moments for Probst and the CBS ad team to hype up. Survivor: Samoa dodged a serious tragedy, and will go on with the game now that Russell Swan is out of sight and mind.
