Monday, September 28, 2009
Owen Wilson left town as well a couple weeks ago, but co-stars Reese Witherspoon and Paul Rudd are expected here for another few weeks. The pair have been spending a lot of time together, and on Thursday caught Regina Spektor's show at the Electric Factory from a private balcony area backstage.
Out and about
* Kobe Bryant stopped by his alma mater, Lower Merion High, Thursday, talking with students and working out there with his own trainer. Bryant, who we reported Thursday had checked into the Four Seasons, was also seen with father, and former Sixer, Joe Bryant, visiting relatives.
* Flyers Mike Richards, Jeff Carter and Scotty Hartnell were at DelFrisco's (15th & Chestnut) a couple of nights back while Simon Gratz High turned NBA star Rasheed Wallace was also dining there.
* Eagles left tackle Jason Peters has become a regular at Dave & Buster's (325 N. Columbus) shooting pool with friends.
Harriton grad on SoapNet show
Harriton High and Penn State graduate Farnoosh Torabi is the financial expert on SoapNet's new show "Bank of Mom and Dad," premiering at 10 p.m. Wednesday. Torabi, who was born in Massachusetts, moved to the Main Line at age 14 and graduated from Harriton in 1998. She majored in finance and later studied journalism at Columbia.
She has formerly reported for New York 1 and wrote a book, "You're So Money." On each episode, the show will feature a 20- or 30-something woman whose parents move in with her and, along with Torabi, help her regain control of her finances.
Charitably minded
The Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society is raffling off a pair of tickets for Bruce Springsteen's Oct. 19 show at the Spectrum. Raffle chances are $5, and for every four purchased, PAWS donates the buyer a fifth chance free. The drawing will be held Oct. 9. For details and to purchase tickets, visit www.phillypaws.org. Proceeds benefit PAWS' lifesaving efforts on behalf of the city's homeless or abandoned animals.
* 610 WIP's Joe Conklin performs at the David Michael Reid Foundation's gala Saturday night at the Dolce Seaview Resort in Galloway, N.J. A football player, Reid was heading into his senior year at Villanova, where he was an offensive lineman, when he drowned in a swimming-pool accident in 2004. Reid's family created the foundation to raise scholarship funds for disadvantaged local high school students. Items up for auction Saturday include a Raul Ibanez-signed bat and a day in studio with WIP hosts Glen Macnow and Anthony Gargano. Tickets and info at www.dmrfoundation.org.
* 610 WIP's Big Daddy Graham performs at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Tunes (910 Berlin) in Voorhees. He's hoping everyone who attends will buy something to support record stores. Musician Mike LeCompt will also perform at the record store.
Kurt Vile record release shows
We told you first months ago that Fishtown's Kurt Vile would sign with Matador Records, the New York indie label. He did, and plays a record release show Saturday at Kung Fu Necktie (1250 N. Front) for "Childish Prodigy," out Oct. 6. Vile also will play at aka music (27 N. 2nd) on Friday night.
No Quarter recording artists Coconuts and Birds of Maya, on Richie Records, are also on Saturday's bill.
