MOFA to close down Johannesburg office

Thursday, October 1, 2009

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said yesterday that it is scheduled to close down its representative office in Johannesburg by the end of October.

"The process of closing down our representative office in Johannesburg is still in progress and is expected to be completed by Oct. 31," said Samuel S.M. Kuo, deputy director-general of MOFA's Department of African Affairs, at a regular press briefing. Since President Ma Ying-jeou took office in May 2008, the MOFA has been reviewing the functions and performance of its foreign representative offices as part of an effort to maximize use of the country's diplomatic resources. It has since closed down overseas offices in Bangladesh, Bolivia, Venezuela and Colon in Panama on grounds that they were under performing or were in close proximity to other Taiwan representative offices.

The MOFA is scheduled to open a new office in Sapporo, Japan later this year.
