THOMASVILLE — A different-looking Cook team will visit Veterans Memorial Stadium tonight. Fortunately for the Thomasville Bulldogs, they should be well prepared. Led by new coach Mac Thompson and a new spread offense, the Hornets will invade Thomasville to play the Bulldogs in a key Region 1-AA battle. This is the second time this year the Bulldogs’ defense will face a spread offensive attack. The first came in a 34-19 loss to Colquitt County and head coach Rush Propst. Thompson coached with Propst in Hoover, Ala. Thomasville should have a good idea what to expect tonight. “I think (Cook) throws the ball a lot better and they’ve got two running backs (Shannon Brown and Armad Turner) and both of those guys are dangerous,” Thomasville coach Richie Marsh said. “They’re in the spread but they can do both run and pass. They just throw the ball deep a lot.” Transitioning from the wing-T to the spread has been a big adjustment for the Cook offense. The Hornets enter tonight 3-3 and are averaging 17 points per game. “We got off to a rocky start but we’re getting better,” Thompson said. “I think every week we’re getting better. We’re still not where we want to be.” Cook’s offense, though, may not have seen the speed on defense it’ll see tonight. Thomasville has gone 11 quarters without allowing a point, following back-to-back shutouts of Early County and Albany. Thomasville’s defense left an indelible mark on Propst earlier this season. “(Thomasville) was right there with them halfway through the fourth quarter,” Thompson said. “It’s one of those things where (Propst) said, he’s glad he doesn’t have to play them twice.”
