Friday's Mega Millions jackpot at $200 million

Saturday, October 17, 2009

A $200-million jackpot prize awaits the winner of Friday night's Mega Millions drawing.

No one has won the prize in 12 consecutive drawings since Sept. 1, according to the state lottery Web site. Since that time, there have been eight metro-area second-place tickets sold in the multistate lottery - five in New York City, two in Suffolk and one in Nassau. Each of those tickets was worth $250,000.

Jackpot winners must pick five correct numbers selected from a number pool of 1 through 56 and the correct Mega Ball selected from numbers ranging from 1 through 46. Second-prize tickets had all five numbers correct, but not the correct Mega Ball.

The odds of hitting the jackpot? According to the state lottery, it's 1 in 175,711,536. For second prize, it's 1 in 3,904,701.

The game is played in New York, New Jersey and 10 other states. Drawings are held Tuesdays and Fridays. The Sept. 1 winning ticket was for $12 million. It was sold in Georgia.
