Body Found in Somer Thompson Search

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

The family of a 7-year-old girl who disappeared while walking home from school two days ago has been informed by authorities than a child's body has been found in a landfill. The child's body was found in a landfill in Folkston, Georgia, just across the Florida state line near where Somer Thompson vanished.
The body has not officially been identified as Thompson's.
"It is not conclusive yet this is Somer, but all indications sort of point in that direction," said Gov. Charlie Crist. "We all need to say a prayer for Somer's family."
Searchers found the body of the young white child at the landfill after sorting through more than 100 tons of garbage. They were not acting on a tip. They followed garbage trucks working Thompson's neighborhood to the site.
No Evidence, No Leads
Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said it was standard operating procedure in a missing person case for police to "begin following garbage trucks" and search nearby landfills. "Now we can begin the painstaking effort of finding who did this and bringing them to justice," Beseler said.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said an autopsy will be conducted on the body today in Savannah.
Somer vanished on her walk home from school Monday in Orange Park, a suburb of Jacksonville. She had been walking with her sister, twin brother, and a friend when she got into an argument with another child. Somer walked ahead of the group and was not home when the others arrived.
With no physical evidence or tips to follow, police interviewed more than 70 registered sex offenders who live within a five-mile radius of where Somer disappeared.
