Pepperdine edges slumping Utah in women's soccer

The Pepperdine women's soccer team defeated host Utah 1-0 in a nonconference game Sunday, knocking the Utes below .500 for the first time this season. Utah (5-6-1) outshot the Waves 17-13, with a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. But Pepperdine (6-5) scored the game's only goal in the 28th minute as Callie Payetta headed in a cross from Michelle Spacciapolli. Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Turpen made four saves in goal for the Utes, who have gone 1-6-1 over their last eight games after a 4-0-0 start elevated them to a No. 21 national ranking. Utah opens Mountain West Conference play at BYU on Saturday.
