Alice in Chains disappointing in new album
Tuesday, September 29, 2009
CD » The new album by Alice in Chains, "Black Gives Way to Blue," makes one again regret the drug-related 2002 death of original singer Layne Staley. The Seattle layered-guitar band reached mainstream success when grunge was the rage in the early 1990s, and the three surviving members have teamed up with Comes with the Fall singer William DuVall for the band's first album of new material since 1995. While the dual vocals of guitarist Jerry Cantrell and Duvall sometimes eerily recreate the unique tensed-throat snarl of Staley, the songs generally don't have the hooks or the terrifying lyrics that made "Dirt" a landmark.
