200 words in appreciation of Kit Kat

Saturday, October 31, 2009

Kit Kat is a rare treat on Halloween as it doesn't typically appear in jumbled bags of "fun-size" candy like its daft and clumsy counterparts Mr. Goodbar and Krackle. Kit Kat's coy scarcity only deepens its allure.

Even its name carries the sleek suggestion of sin. Who could eat that chuckle-head Snickers or the aptly tagged Mounds when the temptress Kit Kat beckons?

Milky Way aspires to such smooth cool.

With its sharp angles and flat surfaces, Kit Kat resembles long, sleek blocks of gold, the name imprinted regally on top (though late comedian Mitch Hedberg would argue that imprint robs you of chocolate). Its construction is no less beauteous to taste, creamy milk chocolate surrounding crisp layers of wafer that give it the faintest resistance.

The valleys are Kit Kat's strength and weakness. To lose them is to have just another block of chocolate rather than a leggy wonder. But they also suggest the unthinkable possibility of sharing. Leave sharing to the scattershot M&Ms, rainbowed sugar pellets for the masses. Just because the Kit Kat lends itself to clean breaks doesn't mean its components are to be distributed. They're to be savored a block at a time. Alone.

Pit Bulls and Parolees' premieres tonight

here's a show debuting tonight on Animal Planet that seems potentially interesting in a bit of a "Rescue Ink" kind of way.

"Pit Bulls and Parolees" is on at 10 p.m. This is how the channel describes it:

Vampire Diaries' Recap: Episode 7, A 'Haunted' Halloween

Warning, "Vampire Diaries" fangatics: if you haven't watched last night's episode, DROP EVERYTHING YOU'RE DOING AT WATCH IT IMMEDIATELY! If you have, then (SPOILER ALERT!) please join me in a moment of silence to mourn one of the most entertaining, most energizing, and most plain old awesome characters on the new series. Oh "VD," how you've killed off your most promising character much too soon.

In my recap two weeks ago, I wrote about how much I enjoyed Kayla Ewell's performance as a newly turned vampire. Unfortunately, that performance, plus the first half of last night's episode, is all we're going to get. In an act of extreme bravery, Stefan staked Vicki in the heart as she lost control of her new urge for human blood and attacked Elena in the parking lot of the high school during the annual Halloween party.

Hmmm, so THAT explains why Katerina Graham played it so coy when I asked her about how Vicki's turning into a vampire would change the dynamic of the show. "Vicki and Bonnie haven't had any scenes together yet so Bonnie isn't really aware necessarily of what's going on," she said. Well, no one else will have any scenes with her anymore, either, since she's kinda dead. And not in the fun, undead kind of way. (I hope Kayla stays real-life BFFs with her cast members, though.)

The first half of last night's episode was all about Stefan (and even Damon, a little bit) helping Vicki take control and understand what was happening to her. Elena spent her time worrying about Jeremy's safety around the newly turned vampire. Of course Damon was his usual bad influence (but damn charming about it), and Stefan was his usual moral compass. He told Vicki, "We choose our own path. Our values and our actions, they define who we are." (Damon's eye-rolling response: "Ooookay, Count Deepak.") Of course, neither Salvatore got control of the wild child Vicki, and after going home to Matt and convincing him to take her to the school's Halloween party, things got out of control when she snuck away to make out with Jeremy at the party. When Elena stepped in to protect her brother, Vicki attacked her instead, leading to Stefan's heroic (and yet, devastating) staking.

Meanwhile, Bonnie learned more about the Bennett family witches, including the fact that the mysterious crystal Damon stole from the Founder's Day party belonged to Bonnie's great great great great grandmother, who was a very powerful witch. Damon hit on Ty's mom, and found out that Zach was supposed to supply the town council with vervane. He didn't even need to use his vampire-compelling thing to do it — which helped, since Ty's mom was wearing a protective bracelet with vervane in it. The gang's Halloween costumes weren't the most inventive, but it was fun to see them all dressed up anyway. Elena and Matt both wore their costumes from last year (sexy nurse and doctor), Ty looked like a "300" gladiator, Bonnie was a witch (fitting), and Vicki, cleverly, was a vampire (even more fitting).

The one good thing we can take from Vicki's unfortunate demise is the hope that some other show will snatch Kayla Ewell up soon enough (and they will, if they know what's good for them!). I hear there's an Ashlee Simpson-Wentz-sized opening on "Melrose Place." I bet Kayla could play the cuckoo bananas part well, if any "Melrose" casting directors happen to be reading this...

As for poor young Jeremy, who just saw the love of his life die before his very eyes, Elena enlisted Damon to erase his memory and make him stop pining for Vicki. However, we didn't see Damon actually do it, which leads me to believe that could come back and haunt Elena in the future. And since we didn't see what happened to Vicki's body, I'm hoping there might be a teeeeensy weensy chance that she might come back too.

Are you as devastated by last night's death as we are? Did you like Vicki becoming a vampire, or were you happy to see her go? How do you think Jeremy will handle Vicki's disappearance? And how will Elena handle the events of last night's episode?

J-Kidd, Mavs Take on Lakers

Jason Kidd and the Dallas Mavericks have been working hard since the season opener, and are ready to face the Lakers and the Clippers this weekend in Los Angeles.

Although the Mavs have never won back-to-back games in LA, this is a challenge that J-Kidd and his teammates are looking forward to. No. 2 said the Mavs have the deepest roster of any team he’s ever played for.

Head coach Rick Carlisle sees this weekend as a great opportunity for J-Kidd and the rest of the team. As he told the Dallas News:

“None of these games are going to be easy … We didn’t play well the first game. We’ve worked hard the last couple days and our goal is to play better and win.”

THE WINNING COMBINATION
Jason and the Mavs are looking to even up their record Friday night against the Lakers. Dallas' struggle in the season opener has caused some tinkering with the lineup. While looking for the winning combination, they might have to switch things up a bit. As J-Kidd told the Star Telegram:

“We’re going to have some funky lineups out there at times.”

Head coach Rick Carlisle expanded.

“Some nights you’re going to be fishing for somebody to give you a spark or somebody that can give you some toughness or defense or some shot-making or whatever. We’ve got a deep roster. I’m certainly not afraid to use everybody. But our core guys, we’re counting on them. We need them to play well.”

J-Kidd and his teammates will try anything to find that perfect lineup they know they have.

The Mavs face the defending champions Friday night at 9:30 and take on the Clippers Saturday night at 9:30. Both games can be seen on KTXA.

400 barrels of oil gush daily into ocean off Australia

SYDNEY, Oct 31, 2009 (AFP) - A massive oil leak off Australia's northwest coast poses an "immediate risk" to dozens of marine species, with untold numbers possibly dying and sinking to the Timor Sea floor, a report has said.

Biologist James Watson was commissioned to carry out a government survey of the West Atlas drilling rig, where at least 400 barrels of oil have gushed daily into the ocean since August 21.

He found about 20 dead seabirds and a dead sea snake among 23 species, and said the oil appeared to be drawing certain species into the toxic area, where they were at grave risk.

"The presence of dying birds and dead sea snakes suggest that there is an immediate risk to species utilising the water that has been affected by the oil slick," Watson wrote in his report, which was released late Friday.

"It is possible that species that are dying or dead and lying in oil-affected water may not stay afloat for long periods of time, making it unlikely that we would find large numbers of dead animals," he added.

There was a "significant risk" that a change in conditions could push the oil into deeper waters further west and north, where large numbers of endangered cetaceans lived, he added.

"Moreover, as the breeding seasons ends... more juvenile birds will be feeding throughout the region. As such, we believe that over the upcoming months the oil slick - if uncontained - may have an increasing impact on these species," he said.

Watson said the spill appeared to have changed the feeding and breeding behaviour of some animals, and long-term studies were needed to determine how severe the impact was.

"I am amazed at how little Australia cares about this," he told the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper.

"This is a huge oil slick."

The rig's Thai-based operator PTTEP Australasia failed in a fourth attempt to plug the leak, now entering its 10th week, and said it could be months before the operation was successful.

More than 2,000 barrels of oil have been recovered from the ocean surface in clean up efforts to date.

Environment Minister Peter Garrett said he remained very concerned about the long-term impact and was "certainly very anxious to see this spill stopped quickly and safely."

"While acknowledging the difficulty of the task at hand, I share the frustrations that efforts to get this spill stopped have so far not been successful," he said.

"However, I am determined that the environmental impacts of this spill are properly assessed and the long term monitoring plan I have commissioned will help ensure that happens."

The World Wide Fund for Nature warned that wildlife was dying and "hundreds if not thousands of dolphins, seabirds and sea-snakes are being exposed to toxic oil" after surveying the spill area, 250 kilometres (155 miles) offshore.

PTTEP Australasia has agreed to pay for environmental monitoring of the area for at least two years.

Akiva Goldsman on 'Lobo,' 'Jonah Hex' and the new 'Swamp Thing'

This is a significantly longer version of an article I wrote on Akiva Goldsman that ran Sunday in the Los Angeles Times Calendar section. Goldsman is one of the busiest Hollywood figures in comics and sci-fi projects with four adaptations coming based on DC characters and his new role as a key figure for the Fox series "Fringe." He's also a figure of controversy for fans who have not forgotten the sight of a Bat-suit with nipples.

Akiva Goldsman arrived at the door of producer Brian Grazer in 1998 with one purpose. "I went there," the screenwriter says, "to beg."

Goldsman, who had enjoyed a steady ascension in Hollywood for years, was coming off a string of films that had badly battered his reputation. He had produced and written the forgettable dud "Lost in Space" -- and far worse, he had written the screenplay that would become the 1997 bomb "Batman & Robin," one of the most savagely disliked movies of the decade.

Lobo Given that history of burnt popcorn, Goldsman seemed like the least qualified writer in Hollywood to take on the task of adapting Sylvia Nasar's "A Beautiful Mind" for the screen, but that's the job he sought when he visited Grazer at the offices of Imagine Films. Shockingly, he got the gig, and the eventual film, about physicist John Nash and his slippery hold on reality, would win four Academy Awards, including best adapted screenplay for Goldsman, best director for Ron Howard and best picture.

"It was a profound experience for all of us involved," Goldsman recently recalled. "And I cannot overestimate what it meant for my career at that point."

The breakthrough put Goldsman in a lofty strata in Hollywood, and his screenwriting credits would include blockbusters such as "The Da Vinci Code," "Angels & Demons," "I Am Legend" and "I, Robot." And now, a decade after seeking a bit of largesse from Grazer, Goldsman is undertaking a new career path behind the camera.

He recently directed the season premiere of the Fox series "Fringe" and is now lining up his feature-film directorial debut. And despite having written what is perhaps the most reviled comic-book movie adaptation of all time, he's aggressively pursuing his childhood love of superheroes as the producer of five movies based on Marvel or DC comic books, including the Guy Ritchie adaptaion of "Lobo," the popular anti-hero show in the image on the right.

On closer inspection, comic-book fantasy and dark psychology are the touchstone themes of Goldsman's career. It's a tandem that might make a therapist smirk or reach for their notepad, and the same goes for the 47-year-old's memories of his childhood. The writer is the son of child psychologists Mira Rothenberg and S. Tev Goldsman, and the nature of his youth was a key reason that Grazer used the writer for "A Beautiful Mind."

Batman and Robin "I grew up, essentially, in one of the very first group homes for what was then termed as 'emotionally disturbed children' -- these were days when, unimaginably, childhood schizophrenia and autism were lumped together in the same population," Goldsman said. "My parents founded this home, and I grew up there in this brownstone in Brooklyn Heights and my peers were, um, crazy. My definition of sanity is very labile; it's flexible and open."

Young Goldsman also lost himself in the tales of Batman, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, the Legion of Super-Heroes and all the other gaudy champions who inhabit the wildly intricate mythos of Marvel and DC. He sees his revisitation to his youthful concerns as a common experience in Hollywood. "I think we're all trying to make sense of what happened [in our childhoods] and that's what's startling -- in getting the chance to make stuff, sometimes, when everything is supended correctly, it feels like it makes sense."

These days, his office at the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank is dotted with comic-book art, superhero statues, sci-fi imagery -- pop-culture signifiers that once would have been viewed as juvenilia but now are as proudly prevalent in Hollywood work spaces as Hitchcock posters and espresso machines.

Losers On a recent afternoon, Goldsman gleefully showed off a personalized drawing that had been given to him years ago by the late Bob Kane, co-creator of Batman, and then debated the finer points of "Days of Future Past," a landmark two-issue X-Men comic-book story from 1981.

None of that, though, changes the fact that Goldsman might be booed off the stage if he were introduced at a comic-book convention. "Batman & Robin," the bloated 1997 movie directed by Joel Schumacher and starring George Clooney and Arnold Schwarzenegger, certainly possesses an odious place in Hollywood history. Times critic Kenneth Turan said the Goldsman script had the "eerie feeling of having no beginning, no middle and no end." That was on the gentle end of the reaction; Goldsman and Schumacher actually received death threats, which suggests that there are a lot of people in the world who take their funny books seriously.

A few months ago, Kevin Feige, the president of production at Marvel Studios, said that "Batman & Robin" was more than a mere failure. "That may be the most important comic-book movie ever made," said Feige, whose studio is now at work on "Iron Man 2" and "Thor." "It was so bad that it demanded a new way of doing things. It created the opportunity to do 'X-Men' and 'Spider-Man,' adaptations that respected the source material and adaptations that were not campy."

Goldsman won't exactly apologize for the film, but he comes pretty close. He said he is proud of the effort put into it and weary of the conversations about its merit. He did learn a lesson from the film. "What got lost in 'Batman & Robin' is the emotions aren't real," Goldsman said, picking his words carefully. "The worst thing to do with a serious comic book is to make it a cartoon. I'm still answering for that movie with some people."

He said honoring the source material is the guiding concept for the projects he has in the pipeline now. Filming recently wrapped on his Warner Bros. project "Jonah Hex," which stars Josh Brolin as the bitter and scarred Old West antihero from DC Comics that dates to the 1970s.

"He's a character that has been described as having one foot on Earth and one foot beyond the grave, that he speaks to the dead . . . at the same time he is very much [like Sergio Leone's] 'The Man With No Name.' "

Jonah Hex poster "Hex," now in post-production, is being directed by Jimmy Hayward, who is following up his very different directorial debut, last year's "Horton Hears a Who." John Malkovich plays the villain, an evil preacher, while Megan Fox and Will Arnett also star.

After that is a commando film called "The Losers," also a DC adaptation, about a team of CIA operatives who are unwittingly sent on a suicide mission but survive and return to face their superiors.

The film stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan -- who got strong reviews for his black-ops and black-hearted role in "Watchmen" -- as well as Zoe Saldana and Jason Patric and is due in April of next year.

There's also "Lobo," a blue- and gray-skinned, super-powered alien who has a bad attitude and delights in mayhem; the character, for the uninitiated, looks like a buffed-out, biker version of Beetlejuice and acts like a bar-fighting big cousin of the extraterrestrial scamp from "Lilo and Stitch." There's also some common ground with the hero-behaving-badly tale of "Hancock," which Goldsman produced.

"Lobo" is being directed by Guy Ritchie, which sounds like an odd fit -- he's rarely succeeded in stories that go past London and this one would take him off-planet -- but Goldsman says he's thrilled with the fit.

"There's something hyperbolic and authentic about a Guy Ritchie movie. His best movie are deeply, deeply stylized yet they are all grounded; there's a grit of stylization, which sounds like an oxymoron but it makes perfect sense when you've seen his films."

Goldsman added: "We've never seen Guy's sensibility married to a project with such a large special effects budget. "

Fringe poster Goldsman said Ritchie will shoot a test scene in November -- "We've got the character design pretty much done," Goldsman said, "and the test will get us moving forward to the next step" -- and casting will be decided after that.

Then there's "Swamp Thing," which Goldsman said will be closer in tone to the character as presented in Alan Moore's eerie, metaphysical horror comics than the rubber-suit bog creature from the 1982 Wes Craven B-movie.

"We want a film with real Southern, dark horror overtones, a little bit like a classic Universal horror film," Goldsman said, knowing full well that his presence on the project will stir controversy -- it's a character that filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has called one of the "few remaining Holy Grails" in comics. There's also also talk of a Fantastic Four reboot, which has been met, no surprise, with sharply different reactions.

Vestiges of fan vitriol remain on the Internet for Goldsman, but in Hollywood his reputation is stellar. J.J. Abrams has brought him into the fold on "Fringe" as a key story collaborator, and Howard has now directed four films with Goldsman as screenwriter.

Howard said he has been "prodding" Goldsman to direct since watching the writer work with Russell Crowe and others on the set of "A Beautiful Mind."

"There have been many screenwriters who moved into directing with varying degrees of success, but it's not an automatic path," Howard said. "Screenwriters have, of course, a great sense of story and the nuances trying to being achieved, but they shield themselves from the practical matters of getting that story told on film. None of that is a problem for Akiva. He's comfortable having conversations with actors and collaborating."

Will Smith and Akiva Goldsman

Goldsman puts a premium on his affinity for teamwork and rattles off all the lessons he's learned from collaborators, such as Howard's open and supportive style, Peter Weir's devotion to authenticity, Will Smith's relentless optimism.

Goldsman got his start late in Hollywood. He had graduated from Wesleyan in 1983 and worked in the mental health field carrying the family tradition of sorts, but he found he was gripped more by flights of imagination than clinical challenges. He studied creative at New York University but novel writing defied him. He became an avid disciple of screenwriting guru John McKee’s approaches and had a breakthrough with his 1994 adaptation of John Grisham’s novel “The Client.”

His own literary beacons won't impress anyone with art-house sensibilities -- he talks with wonder about Stephen King's "ability to understand the emotional architecture of our imagination" -- but his populist tastes, skill with story and that old comic-book collection make him a man for the moment in Hollywood. He's now looking for a feature film to direct, and it may end up being a screen version of his favorite novel, "Winter's Tale," Mark Helprin's 1983 fantasy about an alternate-history New York, a thief and flying white horse.

It's yet another new chapter in the career of a man who has specialized in playing well with others in an asylum setting. "I'm very scared of many things, but drop me into world of people raging with schizophrenia and I feel perfectly at home," Goldsman deadpanned. "And I love Hollywood. Go figure."

-- Geoff Boucher

Chelsea Handler: Playboy Pictures Comedienne On December Cover

Thursday, October 29, 2009

Chelsea Handler Playboy pictures have already leaked, thanks to prime-time host Jay Leno. But, does the comedienne bare all for the magazine? Hang on, Hef. Don’t clear out a room just yet — Chelsea Handler isn’t here to stay. The comedienne appeared on Jay Leno’s prime-time show Wednesday night to debut her Playboy cover, in which Handler appears in a gold bikini. But, that’s all you get to see.

Handler, who hosts the late-night talk show Chelsea Lately says she trained for the skimpy shoot by “not drinking for a day and a half.” Inside photos feature Handler preparing a Christmas dinner with her sidekick from Lately, Chuy. Leno had the cover blown up to wall-size for Handler’s appearance on his show — she had not seen the cover yet.

Handler insists the inside photos were heavily photoshopped, not the result of surgery. The host has spoken out on her show against women who get plastic surgery just because they think men would like it.

When relating a story about George Clooney telling his girlfriend not to get breast implants, Handler commented, “I’m pretty excited. I like hearing that guys don’t like fake boobs because I think people should stop getting fake boobs and I think girls should stop getting plastic surgery.”

Handler’s Playboy issue hits shelves in December.

Droid vs iPhone: The Comparison Chart [PIC]

The Motorola Droid is certainly one of the most discussed new non-Apple smartphones to come out in some time. It launches November 6th on Verizon, but you can already pre-order it from Best Buy.

Is it worth switching to if you already carry an iPhone or another device? To provide some guidance, BillShrink has produced a detailed chart looking at Droid, iPhone, Palm Pre, and MyTouch 3G.

Going by the chart, there doesn’t appear to be much Droid is lacking – other than the 93,200 apps (100,000+ by recent estimates) that the iPhone’s app store offers. You also get Verizon’s network as opposed to AT&T (a fact you’ll no doubt be reminded of in advertising).

As you can see, cost of ownership over 24 months works out exactly the same for both products, while Pre and MyTouch are more affordable. In all, it certainly seems like the Droid will add an interesting new twist the smartphone debate, which to-date has primarily involved iPhone and BlackBerry.

How do you think Droid stacks up? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Jay-Z, Alicia Keys perform clean version of "Empire State of Mind" before World Series Game 2

NEW YORK — Jay-Z and Alicia Keys fired up the Yankee Stadium crowd before Game 2 of the World Series on Thursday night, performing a clean version of "Empire State of Mind" from the rapper's hit album.

The two New Yorkers were originally scheduled to perform Wednesday night but were pushed back because of rainy weather. There was some concern about some of the song's raw language but Jay-Z kept it PG for the nationally televised performance.

The rap king - wearing a Yankees hat and jacket - and Keys got a loud ovation when they walked through an opening in the outfield wall in left-centre to the stage behind second base. Keys, in a black and hot purple outfit, played keyboard before joining Jay-Z in the centre of the stage for the end of the song.

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, who uses a snippet of "Empire State of Mind" for his at-bat music, bobbed his head during the performance. New York reliever Joba Chamberlain also was grooving to the song while the Philadelphia Phillies watched attentively from the top step of the visiting dugout.

A buzz went through the crowd when Jay-Z rapped one of the signature lines of the hit: "I made the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can."

There was more applause after the performance as Jay-Z and Keys walked arm in arm through the outfield to the gate. Phillies pitcher Pedro Martinez was preparing for his Game 2 start nearby but he kept long tossing as the music stars disappeared from sight.

NOT AGAIN: There was another blown call by the post-season umpires in the seventh inning of New York's 3-1 victory over the Phillies on Thursday night.

With one out and runners on first and second, Johnny Damon hit a smash to Philadelphia first baseman Ryan Howard. Umpire Brian Gorman, standing behind the 6-foot-4 Howard, immediately threw his arm up to indicate the ball was caught in the air, but TV replays indicated it bounced into Howard's glove.

Howard took a few steps toward first before throwing to shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who tagged Jorge Posada to complete the inning-ending double play. Posada stood on second for a few moments before bounding off the base to protest the call, and manager Joe Girardi came out of the dugout to argue.

The umpires gathered in the infield after the players returned to their dugouts, but the ruling stood.

A series of umpiring mistakes during the playoffs has led to calls for expanded use of instant replay, but commissioner Bud Selig said before the game he still thinks it's not necessary. Selig did promise more discussion of the topic.

TOP SPOT: Ruben Amaro Jr. was one of Pat Gillick's top lieutenants when the Phillies won the World Series last season.

This time, he's in charge.

Amaro took over as general manager when Gillick retired following last season, ascending to the top spot after 10 years as an assistant in Philadelphia. The club hasn't skipped a beat under his leadership, winning the NL East and the pennant for the second consecutive year.

"What is really pretty cool about this being here right now is the fact that it's the big stage, it's New York," Amaro said before Philadelphia's 3-1 loss in Game 2. "It's the history and we're playing clearly one of the best teams in baseball, in our minds the best team in the American League.

"To be able to match up with this storied franchise and to be in this situation is pretty gratifying. It's pretty neat."

Amaro made a couple of shrewd moves during the season to help the Phillies get to this point. He acquired left-hander Cliff Lee and outfielder Ben Francisco from the Cleveland Indians for four prospects and signed free-agent righty Pedro Martinez.

Lee struck out 10 in a dominant performance in Philadelphia's 6-1 victory in the Series opener. Martinez went 5-1 with a 3.63 ERA in nine starts in the regular season and pitched into the seventh inning in a sharp outing in Game 2.

Amaro, 44, joined the Phillies immediately after his playing career ended in 1998. He worked under former GM Ed Wade for seven seasons and the last three with Gillick.

"I've had a chance to learn from some very, very good GMs in my mind," Amaro said. "They each had some pretty interesting qualities to kind of feed off of."

MIC CHECK: The World Series is back in New York - without its voice.

Longtime public address announcer Bob Sheppard, who recently turned 99, is missing his first World Series since he began his career behind the Yankee Stadium microphone in 1951. Sheppard worked 121 consecutive post-season games, including 62 in 22 Fall Classics, a stretch that ended with the 2006 playoffs.

"Frankly, I'm content to be out of the swing of things," Sheppard said in a phone interview with The Associated Press on Thursday. "I couldn't do it anymore."

With his distinctive voice and the perfect diction that personified his player introductions, Sheppard said his memories of his time with the Yankees are "precious."

His favourite moments at Yankee Stadium spanned his long career.

"Yankee Stadium has so many memories, among them, of course, is the Don Larsen game. That might be near the top," he said. "Reggie Jackson's three home runs in a row. He was outstanding."

Larsen pitched the only perfect game in post-season history on Oct. 8, 1956. Jackson became Mr. October in Game 6 of the 1977 World Series.

And what memory did he cherish most from the Yankees' run of four World Series titles in five years from 1996-00: "They run together like slices of ham."

Sheppard has not worked a game since late in the 2007 season due to a bronchial infection, although he did record the lineups at his home for the final game at the original Yankee Stadium last September.

World Series Game 2 Score Update: Pedro Martinez Dealing

When I went to start writing this World Series game 2 score update Pedro Martinez had been masterful as he had been setting down the powerful Yankee lineup for more than five innings. Martinez had only given up three hits and one run, making one mistake to Mark Teixeira, who launched a solo home run in the fourth inning. However, he just made another mistake, giving up another solo home run, this time to Hideki Maysui. Matsui's bomb over the short porch in left field gives the Yankees a 2 - 1 lead. The game is currently through six and a half innings.

Pedro is giving his team a shot to win this game but just like last night through six innings the Yankees pitcher has been just as good. A.J. Burnett has brought his best to the table as well, giving up just four hits and one run with nine strike outs through seven innings. And the hit they called a single that drove in the Phillies run is a play that Rodriguez has made before but this time he couldn't get his glove on a Matt Stairs rocket into left filed.

Pedro is now coming out in the bottom of the seventh with 99 pitches. FOX showed Charlie Manuel asking Pedro Martinez if he is alright to go back out in the seventh and Pedro was telling him yes. I just had a bad flashback to the Red Sox 2003 ALCS against the Yankees when Grady Little left Pedro out there too long and the Sox blew game 7 and their chance to go to the World Series that year. GET HIM OUT OF THERE CHARLIE!!

Final Score Update: Yankees 3, Phillies 1

Well Chalie Manuel didn't get Pedro out of there and Martinez put the first two batters on in the seventh with no out. The Phillies got out of that jam with a little help from the umps and only surrendered one run to make it 3 - 1. That was enough runs for Mariano Rivera as he held the Phillies for a six out save. The series moves to Philadelphia tied 1 - 1.

What Were Northwest Flight 188’s Pilots Really Doing On Their Laptops?

Last week Northwest Flight 188 overshot its destination by 150 miles, staying in the air over an hour longer than it was supposed to before the pilots noticed their error. Various reasons for this oversight and the pilots’ failure to communicate with air traffic control during that time were investigated. Were they asleep or, even worse, drunk? The answer is less dire, though still disturbing: they were distracted by their laptops.

According to CNN, the pilots were on their computers during “a concentrated period of discussion where they did not monitor the airplane or calls.” What was so engaging that they both lost track of time? CNN says that “[T]he men were talking about the new monthly crew flight scheduling system put into place in the wake of Northwest’s merger with Delta Air Lines.”

A new scheduling system. Uh huh. Why do I have the feeling that something less work-related was involved? I know whenever I get to playing Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook hours and hours can go by without my noticing. And I’ve missed my stop on the train more than once while heavily engaged with Chess Titans.

Regardless of whether their laptop use was work-related or not, Northwest’s policy forbids their use on deck during flights. With in-flight Wi-Fi emerging, that policy may have to be more strictly enforced. These two can’t be the first to sneak in a bit of computer time after they turned on the auto-pilot.

Mexican Halloween position and Mexican Halloween urban dictionary

Halloween is a modern-day holiday originating in the Celtic pagan holiday of Samhain (in Christian times, the eve of All Saints Day). The custom of wearing costumes and masks at Halloween goes back to Celtic traditions of attempting to copy the evil spirits or placate them,

In Scotland for instance where the dead were impersonated by young men with masked, veiled or blackened faces, dressed in white.

Costuming became popular for Halloween parties in the US in the early 1900s, as often for adults as for children.

The first mass-produced Halloween costumes appeared in stores in the 1930s when trick-or-treating was becoming popular in the United States.

What sets Halloween costumes apart from costumes for other celebrations or days of dressing up is that they are often designed to imitate supernatural and scary beings. Costumes are traditionally those of monsters such as vampires, ghosts, skeletons, witches, and devils, or in more recent years such science fiction-inspired characters as aliens and superheroes.

There are also costumes of pop culture figures like presidents, athletes, celebrities, or film, television, and cartoon characters. Another popular trend is for women (and in some cases, men) to use Halloween as an excuse to wear sexy or revealing costumes, showing off more skin than would be socially acceptable otherwise.

The Office - Koi Pond

(S06E08) You know, as a solitary episode, "Koi Pond" was incredibly satisfying from beginning to end. Outside the office, you had Andy and Pam making cold calls, while back at the office you had the aftermath of a different sales call Jim and Michael had gone on.

It was the perfect blend of everything that makes The Office work, when it's on its game. There were plenty of laughs, great lines and little moments for everyone in the office. We got some developments on the dramatic side, and most important of all -- an incredibly awkward moment with Michael Scott.

As for Jim, he's really struggling with aspects of his new position, and it's adding a whole new dimension to his character. He's always been a little insecure about his leadership ability, but now we're seeing that he's about as ineffective in controlling the Scranton branch as Michael ever was, thus realizing many of his worst fears.

After years of crazy in the manager's office, it's probably going to be difficult for them to respond to a more normal managerial style. Plus, they still know Jim as the prankster he was before he got this promotion. And he's trying so hard to be taken seriously, too.

As the episode progressed, I found myself hoping that we might never see Michael fall into the koi pond. It was like the Hitchcockian conceit that what the mind imagines will be far worse than anything we might present on the screen. In this case, what the office workers and what we at home were able to envision was far funnier than what we actually saw.

It took me awhile to realize in what way Jim was wrong there. It seemed like a reflect jerk back at the moment Michael began to fall into the pond, but I can see the argument that he wanted him to go down. It was good to see Michael get that moment of satisfaction. If there's one positive aspect to Michael's character, it's that he is an amazing salesman.

How else would he have not gotten fired a million times already?

I loved how Michael took Jim's advice about self-deprecation leading to others defending you ... I was even surprised when it started working for him. But, of course, he took it too far. The poor guy has been tortured by his peers his whole life. Do you think the writers will at least give him a happy ending when the series finally ends? Would you even want them to?

The rest of the episode was Pam and Andy on their cold calls. First, you had Pam laughing at the thought of her and Andy being married. Then you had Andy saying that Pam was carrying the surrogate child for the hot model he was with, so that she wouldn't lose her figure. "Who cares what Pam looks like."

I thought maybe they'd finally gotten it right when they agreed to the assumption that they were together. But then you had Andy kissing Pam's belly and things got very awkward. It's nice to know that if Michael isn't around, Andy is just as socially clueless.

But it all came down to Andy's loneliness. I guess we're heading toward an Andy-Erin relationship, because she actually thinks he's cool like Marlon Wayans. The writers are still trying to figure out her personality. We know that she's a stickler for rules and that she can't stand being "mean." Oh, and we know that she's an orphan.

I wrote down as many things as I could see on Michael's "Do Not Mock" list, but feel free to add any that I may have missed (or correct me if I got one wrong. Some were seen only fleetingly).

  • Do Not Mock
  • Michael: Koi Pond, Fountain
  • Dwight: Nose too small
  • Erin: Orphan
  • Kevin: Huge Gut
  • Angela: Stingy (or is that Squirrel?)
  • (Meredith): Sex with a terrorist
  • Ryan: Kelly

The Office Webisode “Subtle Sexuality” Now Online Plus New Website

As we mentioned last week, The Office is bringing back their wildly popular webisodes, and this time we get an extra treat in the form of a music video. This series is about Erin, Kelly, Ryan, and Andy from Dunder Mifflin creating a group called Subtle Sexuality and making a music video called “Male Prima Donna”. The three episodes including the music video itself debuted today. Take a look at the hilarious music video below: Erin is easily my favorite in the video, though you can’t beat Ryan’s eye liner. The group is technically only Kelly and Erin, with the guys just being guests. They even have their own website, so check it out to see more about the group, including tour dates (which are just open mics around Scranton). Obviously Kelly is the star of the group and so far Erin seems cool with that. Catch the entire series at NBC.com. I love the idea of making the series a behind-the-scenes kind of thing; really smart. Let us know what you think of the music video and series in the comments below.

Star-studded tribute precedes Game 1

NEW YORK -- It was history in the making in the Bronx on Wednesday night, a fact that country singer Keni Thomas was well aware of.

Tabbed to sing the national anthem prior to Game 1 of the first World Series played in the new Yankee Stadium, Thomas was part of a pregame celebration that included first lady Michelle Obama, Dr. Jill Biden, Yogi Berra and enough star power to mistake the Yankees-Phillies showdown for a night out in Hollywood.

"This is the only song I get nervous singing," Thomas admitted. "Not because I'm afraid I'm going to forget the words, but just the emotion of it."

With a celebrity list that included directors Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and Spike Lee, actors Matthew McConaughey and Alec Baldwin, in addition to former Director of Homeland Security Tom Ridge, ex-New York Ranger Mark Messier, and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Thomas' anxiety was understandable. But it wasn't enough to keep the Atlanta native from enjoying the moment.

"I get to sing the anthem at a lot of different events, and this is by far the greatest crowd," said Thomas, who made his fifth appearance singing for the Yankees, his second at the new stadium. "I don't know what it is about the north, but New Yorkers [baseball] really is their pastime."

Wearing an official World Series Yankees jacket with a Yankee T-shirt underneath, Thomas' anthem ended with boisterous applause from the standing crowd, and was followed by the entrance of Mrs. Obama, Dr. Biden, and Berra. The trio donned matching maroon World Series jackets, with both women linking arms and escorting the Hall of Fame Yankee out onto the field.

Once there, West Point graduate Tony Odierno, who lost his left arm during the war in Iraq, capped an eventful pregame ceremony with a strike, hitting Yankees captain Derek Jeter's glove perfectly for the ceremonial first pitch.

Odierno received the Bronze Star with a Valor and a Purple Heart and now works for the Yankees in Stadium Operations.

Jeter ran out to the mound to greet the quartet, exchanging a warm handshake with Odierno and a hug and kiss on the cheek with Mrs. Obama.

Thomas, also served in the armed forces throughout the 1990s until leaving active duty. In addition to recording an independently released album and charting two singles on the Billboard country music charts, he serves as a motivational speaker, and was thrilled to be a part of a pregame ceremony that paid tribute to the war veterans, through MLB's welcomebackveterans.org initiative.

"It's a big moment indeed," said Thomas of his permanent place in baseball history.

"You can't take that away, it will be here forever."

Sloppy Affair Gives MD to NFL's Mitrione Over Scott Junk on SpikeTV's The Ultimate Fighter 10

Article Posted: October 28th, 2009 | By: Chad Edward | Comments: 0 | Comment Now

Ex-NFL defensive tackle Matt Mitrione (0-0) won a majority decision over UFC veteran “Punk Haole” Scott Junk (6-2-1) by judges’ scores of 20-18 twice and 19-19 in an exhibition fight on SpikeTV’s The Ultimate Fighter 10 Wednesday night.

“Holy shit! Now that’s a fight,” shouted UFC President Dana White between rounds of the two-round exhibition, and for two-and-a-half minutes it was a hot one. White had picked the Hawai’ian Junk who lost by heel hook submission to “Hungarian Nightmare” Christian Wellisch (8-5) at UFC 76 in Los Angeles in September 2007.

But, Junk was dropped at the end of Mitrione punches four times in round one. Junk began the round with a right kick to Mitrione’s mid-section; but, Mitrione caught the kick and countered with a straight that put Junk on his back. Mitrione allowed Junk to stand, but quickly leveled the stocky heavyweight again with a straight right. Again, Mitrione allowed Junk to erect himself. Junk launched a leg kick which Mitrione again caught and countered with a straight that took Junk off his feet.

Mitirione’s advantage was his sharp punching and quick footwork no doubt honed as a defensive lineman in the NFL.

Back on his feet, Junk shot clumsily and Mitrione dropped bomb’s on Junk’s head while Junk scrambled away on his hands and knees. Mitrione followed, sticking a hard knee in Junk’s thick mid-section as Junk knelt at the cage. But, again Mitrione backed off and allowed Junk to stand, feeling for good reason his advantage was on his feet.

With a hook punch, Mitrione dropped Junk for the fourth time in the round as Junk sought to clinch. Junk stood and Mitrione teed off, though the onslaught was mostly shrugged off by Junk and marked the end of Mitrione’s gas tank for the rest of the fight. Junk shot for a single-leg takedown, but Mitrione scooted away. Junk followed Mitrione with a trio of sweeping hooks among which Mitrione touched Junk’s chin with a straight left. Mitrione had thrown himself out, but still landed a thudding right hook to Junk’s chin.

Junk clinched and the two spent heavies rested on each other for 45 seconds before Mitrione dipped away from the cage and landed a leg kick. But, with Mitrione’s hands at his waist, Junk grazed Mitrione with three right hooks before the first round bell dinged.

Fighters.com scored the round 10-9 for Mitrione after Junk salvaged the second half of the round with right hooks. Otherwise, it could’ve been a 10-8 round for Mitrione.

Mitrione opened round two winging dinky, but quick scoring shots. Junk countered with a heavy right hook that just grazed Mitrione. Mitrione scored again with a leg kick. Junk grazed Mitrione with another right hook, then shot for a double-leg takedown, landing in Mitrione’s full guard. Junk landed right hooks to Mitrione’s body and nose before referee Josh Rosenthal stood the pair for playing patty-cake on the mat.

Mitrione unleashed a brief second wind after the rest on the mat, scoring with a stinging 1-2 combo and a teep kick. A Junk right hook backed up Mitrione, who countered with a right cross that jerked Junk’s chin. Junk followed up with a pair of grazing right hooks. Mitrione continued scoring with winging shots from all angles while Junk loaded up right hooks. The pair traded leg kicks before the end of the second round.

Fighters.com again scored the round 10-9 in favor of Mitrione, but the second round was much tighter than the first.

White was generous after the fight, saying, “Those two stood in front of each and threw bombs. Both took some big shots.”

After the decision was announced for Mitrione giving Team Rashad coached by Fighters.com’s third-ranked light heavyweight “Sugar” Rashad Evans (13-1-1) a 7-0 lead in the contest over Team Rampage coached by now-retired fifth-ranked “Rampage” Quinton Jackson (28-7), Jackson dismantled a door at the UFC gym with his bare hands and bare head.

The final exhibition bout of round one between Team Rampage’s last hope “Big Baby” Marcus Jones (4-1) and Team Rashad’s Mike Wessel (8-3) will be fought next Wednesday on SpikeTV.

Bill O’Reilly Likes Mooncalf; Is Actually Himself A Dead Baby Cow.

And lo, O’Reilly says dumb shit again. Here’s a video of him blabbing on about the word ‘mooncalf’, which is the definition of an aborted cow fetus. How delightful. It’s like the blind leading the blind.

I just don’t get his appeal. How can Fox News watchers even come vaguely close to liking anything he says? He’s the smuggest asshole in the world, as is Glenn Beck, and they don’t so much pander to the idiots that watch Fox News as they rub them on their heads and go “yes you areeeee!” while decrying the Obama administration that’s working hard to protect the civil liberties. I mean, HONESTLY, y’all. And now he jumps upon liking dead baby cows fetuses. What the hell. Is he drunk? Can I have what he is drinking? He is drunk on the blood of idiots. I want to punch him so bad it hurts. Just once! Just once when he isn’t looking. That’s all I want for Christmas.

Sea Shepherd No Longer Alone in the War Against Whaling

Avid watchers and followers of the hit Animal Planet TV show Whale Wars will be ecstatic to hear that the Sea Shepherd crew finally has another ally to help them in their war against commercial whaling on the high seas. This past week, it was announced that New Zealand’s Earthrace crew will be joining the fight, making their combined effort quite the ominous force to be reckoned with.

sea-shepherd

The Earthrace ship (recently renamed the Ady Gil) is said to look like something out of the future or perhaps a form of alien watercraft. It is a tri-hull wave piercer, built 78 ft (24 m) long and is capable of going underwater to a depth of 23 ft (7 m). The shape of the ship allows it to cut through the waves, rather than sail on top of them, as most boats do; and it can travel at a speed up to 40 knots. Paul Watson, captain of the Sea Shepherd’s crew and flagship Steve Irwin, said “we’ll be using it to intercept and block harpoons”. This will be an extremely helpful tactic, considering that the Japanese whalers have a “thing” for explosive harpoons.

The explosive harpoon may be one of the cruelest ways for a whale to meet its grim fate. The harpoon is shot into the whale and explodes inside the body; if that doesn’t work, whalers will then start to use rifles or a penthrite harpoon. Due to these barbaric methods, it can take some whales over an hour to die. What’s worse, there is no limit on the number of weapons that can be used to kill a whale, nor a limit on the amount of time it takes for the animal to die. They have to suffer through every twisted bit of gore that man sees fit to put them through, even in areas that are supposed to be their sanctuaries.

Yes, that is right, Japan also hunts in what are supposed to be protected whale and sea life sanctuaries; protected by the IWC at that. Even more ridiculous is the way the Japanese attempted to appeal to the International Whaling Commission, stating the Steve Irwin ship endangered their lives in the Southern Ocean last year (where one of the sanctuaries is located). “We cannot tolerate such audacity,” Jun Yamashita—a Japanese delegation member—told the commission. “We ask for all appropriate measures, including a ban on the ship from leaving port, so that we can prevent these acts from being repeated.” It seems to me they just want to be able to do their illegal whaling stints without being under watch or under attack.

Chelsea Handler: Playboy's Biggest Issue Ever?

Chelsea Handler's dad must be so proud.

Playboy's December cover girl set herself up for the big reveal tonight on The Jay Leno Show, joking with the host that her pop was going to love it "because he thinks I'm very sexual."

Then Jay surprised Chelsea with a larger-than-life version of the leggy blonde's Playboy cover, featuring the Chelsea Lately host (who quit drinking for "like a day and a half" to get in shape) standing in some faux snow, clad in a barely there white bikini and tall cushy boots.

Handler demurred, however, when a slightly worked-up Jay encouraged her to strike a similar pose for the audience.

"We need the guy that airbrushed me to come back," she cracked.

The Biggest Loser: The Half Way Point

Hello and welcome to The Biggest Loser week seven and the halfway point in the competition. Last week, America said goodbye to Dina, who went on to lose more weight and get a makeover that made her look and feel wonderful. This week’s episode opens with the Black Team rejoining the Blue Team at the ranch. Rudy is particularly upset since Dina was his partner and now she is gone. Liz thinks this is all BS and thinks it is only getting harder here on end.

CHALLENGE ONE

Ali greets them and lets Rudy he is thirteen pounds away from the one hundred pound mark. If it is done this week, he will break the record of doing it in the shortest amount of time.

This week’s challenge is going head to head at the weigh in from someone in the opposite team. Each team who ‘wins’ the weigh in will get a point and whoever gets the least amount of points total will have to eliminate someone. The winner of the pop challenge will have to choose the teams.

The challenge is to run back and forth and bob a coin dangling. Each player gets one turn and they can go one at a time. It is a close call, but the Blue Team wins, thanks to Rebecca. The Black Team is frustrated, and hopes for the best in the challenge.

Amanda will go against Rebecca.
Tracey and Abby will go head to head.
Danny and Allen will face off.
Rudy and Shay are competing against each other this week.
Liz will challenge Daniel.

WORKOUTS, DEREK JETER AND MORE CHALLENGES

After the teams are chosen, Bob works his team at the pool and keeps reminding them how important that point is. Jillian has her team in the gym and gives Amanda a hard time. She admits she is so used to being the fat girl but is not ready for her success. She has a breakdown and runs out of the gym.

The challenge this week involves baseball, DEREK JETER and lifesize cardboard cutouts of themselves. Derek tells them how inspirational they are and tells the black team to step it up and how proud he is of Daniel in particular. He tells them to grab as many balls as they can and hit their opponent. The first opponent to get 316 is out. The winning team gets a 2 pound advantage at the weigh in and lunch with Curtis Stone. Since Abby can’t play, a blue team member must sit out—so they choose Tracey.

Allen and Amanda are out first, followed by Rebecca, Daniel, Rudy and Liz, which leads to the Black Team win.

Curtis shows them how to cook a BBQ the healthy way. They make turkey burgers with Portobello mushrooms in a panini maker.

JILLIAN THE FRIEND

Jillian and Abby have a heart to heart and Jillian hopes to help her find that love and happiness again. This segment made me cry so much—just hearing her story and her knowing she has the strength to carry on and love her life.

Jillian also has a talk with Amanda. Jillian thinks she is walking out on herself, and Amanda admits she is not used to the change but Jillian makes her realize that she sometimes has to fall before she can succeed.

During the last chance workout, everyone is pushed to the very limit so they can have the chance to win the weigh in. Jillian talks to Shay while she is working out and she admits how she couldn’t save her mom or win her love. Jillian makes her face the fact that she has to stop blaming herself.

WEIGH IN

Amanda: 218-4=214 lbs (212 with 2 lb advantage)
Rebecca: 232-9-223 lbs (one point for blue team)
Abby: 204-3=201 lbs
Tracey: 202-5=197 lbs (one point for the blue team)
Danny: 357-12=345 lbs (one point for the black team)
Allen: 270-8=262 lbs
Daniel: 277-5=272 lbs
Liz: 228-7=221 lbs (one point and a win for the blue team)
Shay: 411-9=402 lbs
Rudy: 355-14-341 lbs (he is also surprised by Dane from last season to
support him in this 100 lb weight loss and the record break.)

Danny has immunity, so everyone else will be in elimination. Shay says Abby gave her the love and mom she always wanted and it is hard to eliminate her. Daniel says Abby found her place here. Abby tells them it is ok to write her name down.

Abby: Amanda
Shay: Abby (only because Abby told her to)
Amanda: Abby
Danny: Daniel
Daniel: Abby (again, because she said so)

This means Abby will be leaving tonight. She says the show gave her new dreams. I truly think she was the most loved contestant ever. She tells Daniel will be everything he is supposed to be and hugs everyone before she leaves.

UPDATE
She goes home and is greeted by friends and family. She says she is back and happy to have them all with her. She is doing motivational speaking and now lost a total of 80 pounds. The episode is dedicated to her family.

Tune into The Biggest Loser next week for karma and cooking at the White House. Goodnight.
